“Where did the name ‘RedSpade’ come from?”
Our story began about 2 years ago, in 2012 when we (the Spades) sat down to decide on a name that met some core concepts:
Ideas of passion and wisdom also came to mind as we searched for something that could represent both the struggles and the joys that riding and racing brings us all.
In our research we thought of a common symbol that while familiar to us, seemed to represent something deeper, something we were not fully aware of… the spade.
The Spade Suit
Although the name of the suit resembles the digging tool (shovel), the name “spade” actually comes from the Italian “spada,” which means “sword,” the corresponding suit in Italian card decks. In English, as in French, the Spade suit represents weapons.
The Sword (spade) often represents logical and rational thought, cutting through uncertainty and slicing truth away from falsehood.
Some believe the Spade to be the most powerful suite in the deck, and was often a symbol worn on helmets and planes during war. The Ace of Spades is the most commonly used card when promoting BlackJack and considered to be of great luck.
Further research on MetaSymbology revealed a deeper meaning, one that resonated with our beliefs.
“…a symbol of labor, and all too often you try to solve all your problems by the sweat of your brow or through questionable schemes. But, realize that your card is also a symbol of spiritual wisdom, and as the life pattern portrayed in your card is not a particularly easy one… It may help you cope with and transcend the many challenges which appear to be part of your destiny…
Discipline and vision are essential keywords toward the overcoming of your problems. In the process, you may also become a source of inspiration to others.”
It was then, we knew we found our calling – the Spade. The idea of the spade was a perfect fit for our core belief – but we needed something more. Our first logo (the one you see today) originally had the spade in a solid shape. However, a spade is just a spade…we needed something unique, something that said “passion for racing”.
Days went by with ideas scribbled on paper, shapes of motorcycles, gears, wheels, roads. Then a moment of clarity struck — the spade IS a curve, it’s the apex — it’s the race line! And we all know when you hit that apex just right – it’s one of the greatest feelings.
Why the Red, you ask?
Three reasons really, RedSpade herself got into riding with bright red hair, and carries a lot of meaning to the transition in her life. A black spade is just too ordinary and we didn’t want it to be confused with direct gambling meaning. And last but not least, red is the color of passion (at least in our culture) – representing our passion for the sport of riding and racing in general.
The added bonus that it looks more like the rubble strips at many of the tracks we visit doesn’t hurt either. 😛
What’s your take on the Spade?
